Here are a couple of awesome time capsules – Indianapolis nearly a century ago. I really enjoy the footage of Lady Victory towering over the majority of buildings downtown. It’s a more complicated horizon now and I always wondered how she looked when the skyline was her’s alone.

I would be remiss if I did not share my three favorite places in Indianapolis to recommend to visitors:

Photo of the thinman at the Central Library in Indianapolis

The "thinman" at the Central Library

Central Library

Our Central Library was designed in 1913 by Paul Cret. It opened in 1917 but was not officially complete until April 24, 2009. The dedication of Peter Shelton’s thinmanlittlebird completed Mr. Cret’s vision of art occupying the building’s pedestal features on either side of the southern entrance. The dedication also heralded the completion of this century’s expansion project. Be sure to check-out the north entrance. I also recommend an escalator ride up to the top floor, it affords a nice view of the city with Memorial Plaza in the foreground.

The Athenæum

German American architects Bernard Vonnegut & Arthur Bohn designed both sections of The Athenæum/Das Deutsche Haus. Construction began in 1893 and was completed in 1898. It is home to The Rathskeller. Established in 1894 as the Athenaeum Restaurant, The Rathskeller is Indianapolis’ oldest operating restaurant. Bernard Vonnegut was 20th century author Kurt Vonnegut, Jr’s grandfather.
